Lately, re-reading The Story of San Michele by Axel Munthe, I was struck by something odd in his musings on the nature of homesexuality.

With all the delicacy and tact that 1929 had to offer, Munthe wonders whether there might be a genetic cause for what he calls ‘sexual inversion’:
